His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Jn 2:5.
I can remember questioning my parents when I was a child. One of them would tell me to do something and instead of doing it I would respond with “Why” and then “but why” when they said it again. It was if I needed to understand why I was doing what they told me to do before I carried out the order. Most of the time I ended up doing it anyway because their response usually ended with “…because I said so.”
I hope we have recognized God’s sovereignty by now and know that He is worthy of blindly following. I can’t say that about anyone else because everyone else is prone to making a mistake. The Bible is God’s word and if it gives a command my response should not be “why”. Phillipians 4:7 speaks of “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,”. We can enjoy peace without being able to fully understand it so why should we not able to live life by following God’s direction without understanding every reason for His commands. That peace comes by throwing off the anxiety before God and asking for what we need. Our Father hears us and cares for us.
Nike’s slogan of “Just Do It” fits perfectly here. Follow Jesus becasue He is our savior and He cares for us. He gave His life for us. There is no unrighteousness in Him and He looks out for our best interest. Sometimes that interest collides with our own interest and causes us to ask “why?”. Know that His way is the right way. Always.
