And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), 1 Ki 18:21.
Elijah addressed the people because there was Baal worship among them. They were wavering between worshipping God and Baal. From our perspective, there is no comparison bewtween the two. One is the creator of the universe and the other is a creation of man. God is the only true god.
Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal that whichever god responded was the god that would be worshipped. The children of Israel agreed as well. God obviously responded in an over-the-top way and all the prophets of Baal were executed. This mighty response from God convinced the children of Isarel to worship God and God alone.
What is it going to take for us to follow God and only God? What is going to take to forsake the Baal’s of this world and choose the one true God that has overcome the world? It should require nothing more than our salvation.
