21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Jn 14:21–22.
There are a lot of scriptures in the Bible that I don’t understand. I often wonder how I can be obedient to the Word of God when I don’t fully understand it. Surely I’m missing something.
Mark Twain famously said, “It ain’t the parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it’s the parts that I do understand.” He may have been trying to make another point but for me I think it’s more in line with the “bird in hand” theory. Why should I worry about the parts of scripture that I don’t understand when there are plenty that I do understand. The real question is, how am I doing with those? Am I being obedient and implementing the scriptures that I do understand?
I believe that God will allow me to understand more as I become more consistent with what I already know. He may use what I already know to build an understanding of what I don’t yet understand.
